Consultants provide advice and information to early care and education programs, public schools, state agencies and other organizations. Their work may include helping to develop new early care and education programs, creating public policy, and improving quality. They may also work with employers who may want to offer family-friendly benefits. Consultants are often self-employed, and they should be knowledgeable about policies related to self-employment.

Skills and Competencies


  • In-depth knowledge of early education and child development.
  • Ability to identify funding sources and systems that support the early childhood system
  • Knowledge about early education laws and regulations
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Engage in research and evaluation to support recommendations and action plans

Preferred Qualifications

Ideal candidates will have at least one (1) of the following qualifications:

    • Masters or Bachelor Degree with a major or concentration in Early Childhood, Child or Human Development, Elementary or Special Education with a birth to age eight focus or Child and Family Service
